Alessandro Mendini- Proust Geometrica Armchair

The multicolor fabric Proust Geometrica Armchair with hand-carved + hand-painted wooden frame is the new face of Proust Armchair by Alessandro Mendini.

Proust created in 1978 for the Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara was immediately recognized as an icon of 20th century design. In 1993, Cappellini inherited the piece & today after reupholstered in a new cotton fabric with traditionally hand-finished by Alessandro Mendini, Proust Geometrica still preserves the forms + value of the original Proust armchair but with a refreshing breath of new life + image.

The designer:

Alessandro Mendini, born in 1931, as an architect and a designer he mainly cares about neo-modern and contemporary design; in this area he designs furniture and environments. In the past, he directed magazines such as Casabella, Modo and Domus; many essays have been published in different languages about his work and his “Atelier Mendini”. For Alessi, Philips, Swarovski and Swatch he designed items now considered icons of the worldwide contemporary design overview.

Binta Armchair by Philippe Bestenheider

Binta for Moroso, is an Africa-inspired armchair by Swiss designer Philippe Bestenheider. The chair’s form is based on African wood carvings and the upholstery is based on Senegalese patchwork fabrics.

'Binta was inspired by Africa. Its sculptural shape evokes African wood carvings, but its polyurethane rubber forms are softer. Like a baobab tree, Binta anchors itself firmly to the ground with thick, trunk-like feet whose elegant forms bring to mind the weighty baobab.
Its upholstery is a patchwork of Wax fabrics, the traditional textiles worn by African women. Contrasting patterns and colours emphasise the armchair’s shape, enveloping and moulding its silhouette.

The brash, bright colour contrasts are in the tradition of African textiles and colour schemes; they conjure up the elegant tailoring of women’s clothes as if Binta were a Senegalese lady about to wear and enhance the hot colours of Africa.'

Bouquet by Tokujin Yoshioka

I love this! Bouquet is an armchair with sublime simplicity design by Tokujin Yoshioka. The chair "blooms" on a slim, chrome-metal stem that blossoms with white or delicately-coloured "petals" made of hand-folded fabric squares sewn one by one, with great care and infinite patience, to completely cover the internal surface of the egg-shaped, wrap-around shell.

“I got the idea for Bouquet from the installation I created last October for Moroso's New York showroom. I used about 30,000 paper tissues to recreate a cloud-like atmosphere. The Bouquet makes people who sit on it happy, just as a bouquet makes the person who receives it happy. The vibrant, delicate colours trigger different sensations in each of us.”

'Jendela Batik'- Pushing the Boundaries for Malaysian Batik

Lovely vibrant color isn't it? These are nature design fabric from Jendela Batik collection. I was searching for local fabric design & i found these...

I remember my maternal grandmother (a nyonya, who my sis, brother & i adore so much) use to wear those batik sarong with her daily white clothes . She did not wear kebaya like those nyonya did. She only put on her best 'kebaya with sarong batik & keronsang' on special occasion like during wedding dinners, chinese new year etc....

Batik is found in several countries of West Africa, such as Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon and Mali, and in Asia, such as India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Iran, the Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand. Jendela Batik believes believes that the possibilities for Malaysian Batik are limitless. They push the boundaries of current batik design by challenging the notion of a 'typical' Malaysian Batik without dismissing the concept entirely. Jendela Batik focus in re-interpret batik, re-innovate traditional techniques & motifs & locate it within a more modern & progressive Malaysian & global identity. This is what i get from Jendela's website but what i really crave for is the concept behind those beautifully done individual art pieces...
